The species lived in coastal sand dunes of the Sunset District of\u00a0San Francisco\u00a0peninsula. The Xerces blue is believed to be the first American butterfly species to become extinct as a result of loss of habitat caused by urban development. The last Xerces blue was seen in 1941 or 1943.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Silent Spring\u00a0&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jillienesellner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jilliene Sellner<\/a> (Audio)<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Silent Spring\u00a0is the title of Rachel Carson\u2019s book published in 1962 warning of the impending environmental disaster of unbridled industrial pesticide manufacture and use. This sound piece refers both directly and indirectly to Carson, related or inspired work such as Massive Attack\u2019s track\u00a0Silent Spring, Steven Stucky\u2019s symphonic poem of the same title, as well as crop spraying and extracts from David Mitchell\u2019s\u00a0The Bone Clocks\u00a0and Maggie Gee\u2019s\u00a0The Ice People.
