I add a \u2018<\/span><span id=\"E77\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">c<\/span><span id=\"E78\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u2019 and it throws up<\/span><em><span id=\"E79\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0honeybee collection\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E80\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">or\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E81\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">collapse<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E82\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">; add a \u2018d\u2019, and it\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E83\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">declines\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E84\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">or\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E85\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"><em>decorations for your home<\/em>.<\/span><span id=\"E86\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0I work my way through the alphabet;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E87\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u2018l\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E88\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">is unequivocal.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E89\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"><em>Honeybee losses 2017,<\/em><\/span><em><span id=\"E90\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E91\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">2016,<\/span><span id=\"E92\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E93\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">2015<\/span><span id=\"E94\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,\u00a0<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E95\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"><em>2014.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"contentsContainer\">\n<div id=\"contents\">\n<p><span id=\"E98\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Some days I can\u2019t tell if honeybees are coming or going. In<\/span><span id=\"E99\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0a sense<\/span><span id=\"E100\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,<\/span><span id=\"E101\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0they\u2019re everywhere\u00a0\u2013 collecting on our shelves, decorating our homes. In the supermarket this week I passed bee-themed mugs, place mats, bath towels and lunchboxes\u00a0\u2013 not to mention the honey (<\/span><em><span id=\"E102\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E103\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">LOVE\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E104\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">bees<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E105\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, the girl at the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E106\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">checkout<\/span><span id=\"E107\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0told me, when I told her I was a beekeeper. She showed me her bee earrings and a bee-shaped pendant.\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E108\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I really love them<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E109\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, she said, tucking the necklace back inside her shirt collar). And yet, e<\/span><span id=\"E110\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">l<\/span><span id=\"E111\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">sewhere,\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E112\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">out there<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E113\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E114\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">where the real bees live,<\/span><span id=\"E115\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0we\u2019re told t<\/span><span id=\"E116\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">here are losses and declines and last month I heard a new word,\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E117\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">insectageddon<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E118\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E120\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">That came from an article about a study in Germany<\/span><span id=\"E121\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, among the first of its kind<\/span><span id=\"E122\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. Between 1989\u00a0and 2016, 1,500 insect samples were collected across 63 sites\u00a0\u2013 a total haul of over 50kg, and several million flying creatures. The results are disturbing: a 76% drop in numbers<\/span><span id=\"E123\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, over\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E124\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">27 years<\/span><span id=\"E125\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Since the paper was published,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E127\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">more<\/span><span id=\"E128\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0scientists have stepped forward to suggest the findings are likely to reflect a pattern occurring across Europe and beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E131\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">We\u2019ve heard already about losses to honeybee, butterfly and bumblebee populations; these findings dramatically extend the scale. Around one third of our global food supply is dependent upon honeybees and other pollinating species\u00a0\u2013 i<\/span><span id=\"E132\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">f flying insects were to disappear, not only would we lose individual species<\/span><span id=\"E133\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E134\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">our landscapes, our ecologies, our diets<\/span><span id=\"E135\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0and so even the stuff of our own bodies<\/span><span id=\"E136\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, would also be\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E137\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">radically<\/span><span id=\"E138\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E140\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">It\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E141\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">one thing t<\/span><span id=\"E142\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">o read headlines like these; another to absorb them.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E143\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">The words are big. They\u2019re dramatic, they\u2019re catastrophic.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E144\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I imagine they\u2019re probably driving<\/span><span id=\"E145\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0the appetite<\/span><span id=\"E146\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0for honeybee mugs and bath towels \u2013 loss can make us grabby. Yet when I look out of the window,<\/span><span id=\"E147\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0i<\/span><span id=\"E148\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">t is not catastrophe, not\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E149\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ageddon<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E150\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, that I see.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E152\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">A few years ago, when I was living in Oxford and about to become keeper to a colony of bees, this\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E153\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">was<\/span><span id=\"E154\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0something I<\/span><span id=\"E155\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u2019d<\/span><span id=\"E156\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0been<\/span><span id=\"E157\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0struggling with. I\u2019d read about honeybee losses in the papers. It sounded bad, but it felt remot<\/span><span id=\"E158\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">e;<\/span><span id=\"E159\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0I wondered what would happen if I stepped to one side of the newspaper headlines and got to\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E160\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">know<\/span><span id=\"E161\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0a colony\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E162\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">firsthand<\/span><span id=\"E163\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. Would I sense a slippage, a thinning?\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E164\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">And would I,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E165\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">in my slim end terrace with a weedy garden out back and a<\/span><span id=\"E166\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0work\/life balance tipping dangerously towards collapse<\/span><span id=\"E167\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, find a way of sustaining the bees in my care \u2013 of keeping them?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E170\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I bought a suit. I got a colony.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E171\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E172\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">was suddenly<\/span><span id=\"E173\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0more<\/span><em><span id=\"E174\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0involved<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E175\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E176\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">in another<\/span><span id=\"E177\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0creature than I had been for\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E178\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">years<\/span><span id=\"E179\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. I tended them, fretted over<\/span><span id=\"E180\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0them<\/span><span id=\"E181\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><span id=\"E182\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0I hefted pieces of hive and beekeeping equipment. It was both a love and a labour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E184\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">My garden was bordered by a crumbling wall, a hedge and a high fence<\/span><span id=\"E185\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">; s<\/span><span id=\"E186\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">tanding inside it, I couldn\u2019t see very\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E187\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">far<\/span><span id=\"E188\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0at all. I could see the sky. I could see a warehouse roof, our neighbours\u2019 house, the tops of the trees<\/span><span id=\"E189\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0lining<\/span><span id=\"E190\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0the allotments. I could hear the traffic on the road outside, and the man who shouted as he walked. I wasn\u2019t mindful\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E191\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">of\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E192\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">much of this; I was busy focusing on the hive. I had to\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E193\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">become<\/span><span id=\"E194\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0very attentive to what was happening inside it; to watch for slight\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E195\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">shifts<\/span><span id=\"E196\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0in the activity of the colony that might signal disease or pests or a drop in available forage. I wanted to get to know their rhythms, understand their processes<\/span><span id=\"E197\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0(these were different, I realised, on different days\u00a0\u2013 a colony is as changeable as the weather).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E200\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">U<\/span><span id=\"E201\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">p<\/span><span id=\"E202\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0close like this,<\/span><span id=\"E203\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E204\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I learned\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E205\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">a little about the landscape. A little about how bees make sense of the world, how they perceive it.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E206\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">And, b<\/span><span id=\"E207\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">y watching their journeys,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E208\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">by\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E209\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">looking for<\/span><span id=\"E210\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">what they were bringing back,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E211\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I learned something about what they were\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">finding<\/span><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0out there, b<\/span><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">eyond the fence;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E215\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">a<\/span><span id=\"E216\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">bout what their world was composed of. Honeybees collect pollen for feeding young and nectar for making honey; they temporarily ingest the nectar when they carry it back to the hive, and stick the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">pollen to their knees. A few months in, a friend showed me how to tell the source of these pollen nubs by their colour,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E217\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and so make a fairly reasoned guess as to where the bees had flown. Deep yellow might be dogwood<\/span><span id=\"E218\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">; soft green was probably meadowsweet.<\/span><span id=\"E219\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E220\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I felt like a detective, sifting for clues. Except that, for the most part, the clues were in a language I didn\u2019t speak.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E222\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">A honeybee colony is like nothing else. It froths and boils and quivers and shakes; it\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E223\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">murmur<\/span><span id=\"E224\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">s<\/span><span id=\"E225\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E226\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">thrums and whines. Lifting the lid of a hive and taking a look inside can be a disorienting experience\u00a0\u2013 the bees are so foreign, so far from your familiar, they can make you feel<\/span><span id=\"E227\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0completely\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E228\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">lost; they can also turn you around,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E229\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and inside out<\/span><span id=\"E230\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0\u2013\u00a0t<\/span><span id=\"E231\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">hey can\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E232\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">rearrange how you see. They rearranged and reorientated me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E236\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I\u2019m writing this\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E237\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">on a\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E238\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">wooden stool, in the window of a small\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E239\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">cafe<\/span><span id=\"E240\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. They have baklava and free wifi. I can look out and see a road and a row of houses; I can look out and see<\/span><span id=\"E241\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E242\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">the silvery rim of a stand of beeches<\/span><span id=\"E243\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, a\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E244\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">heap<\/span><span id=\"E245\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0of ivy hanging over a wooden fence, two kids in jeans with mud on their knees kicking a punctured football at a w<\/span><span id=\"E246\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">all<\/span><span id=\"E247\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. For the last half hour, I haven\u2019t actually looked out of this window at\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E248\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">all;<\/span><span id=\"E249\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0I\u2019ve been reading about that German study, the one that prompted calls of an insectageddon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Today I am interested not so much in the findings, but the method. I\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">have been learning<\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">(as the football bounced off the window of a passing car, and the car stopped, and the boys made a run for it,) a<\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">bout<\/span><span id=\"E255\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0malaise traps. A malaise trap is like a tent on stilts, pitched at one end and made of netting. Inside the pitched roof there\u2019s a funnel leading to a collecting cylinder with a quantity of ethanol inside, a killing agent. The other end of the tent is wide open;\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">when\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">insects fly in,<\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0they<\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0head up through the funnel and get trapped in the collecting cylinder. The basic design was invented in 1934 by\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Ren\u00e9 Malaise, hence the name. It was the sole means of sampling in the\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E261\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">German study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">O<\/span><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ver the past 27 years, b<\/span><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">etween the months of March\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E266\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and<\/span><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0October, malaise traps were placed\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">in<\/span><span id=\"E269\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">63\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E271\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">nature reserves<\/span><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0across west Germany<\/span><span id=\"E273\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">. The cylinders were emptied and their contents weighed every few days. The work was done not by scientists but amateur entomologists, who visited and monitored the traps and made detailed recordings of the weather. They had strict instructions. The samples were weighed (with minute accur<\/span><span id=\"E274\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">acy, since the creatures were featherlight); the weights later combined and compared. Leavin<\/span><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">g a trap open for a prolonged period<\/span><span id=\"E276\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0can be harmful to local insect populations, so those used in the study tended to be moved from one year to the next, and for this reason the pattern that emerges reflects not the individual stories of specific sites, but<\/span><span id=\"E277\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0something more like an accretion; a collecting up and laying out through time of\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">umpteen<\/span><span id=\"E279\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E280\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">temporary<\/span><span id=\"E281\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">and scrupulously recorded\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E282\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">views.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E285\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">I wonder about those amateur entomologists who emptied the collecting cylinders, who tramped down to the tents each week. Did they have a sense, as they\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E286\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">tipped the alcohol-soaked specimens onto the weighing scales, of the extent of the pattern unfolding? Did they sense disaster?\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E287\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Or was the change was too small, too slight to notice week-to-week?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E289\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Nature reserves exist with the sole purpose of\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E290\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">preserving ecosystem functions and biodiversity<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E291\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, so to find such a sharp decline in resident species<\/span><span id=\"E292\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">is alarming. The researchers studied the findings; they factored in changes to land use and the weather. Neither could account for the declines, which\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E294\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">occurred<\/span><span id=\"E295\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0throughout the growing season, and irrespective of habitat type.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E296\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\"><em>Large scale factors must be involved<\/em><\/span><span id=\"E297\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, they reasoned\u00a0\u2013 but such factors\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E298\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">l<\/span><span id=\"E299\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ie<\/span><span id=\"E300\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0beyond the scope of their investigation<\/span><span id=\"E301\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">s<\/span><span id=\"E302\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"E305\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">A nature reserve is a protected space but it is also a form of island, and recording only the environmental changes\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E306\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">inside<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E307\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0the parks will never give a complete picture because islands don\u2019t\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E308\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">exist in isolation<\/span><span id=\"E309\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E310\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Almost every reserve\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E311\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">included in the study<\/span><span id=\"E312\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0was surrounded by agricultural land, which over the last half century has undergone a process of rapid intensification.\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E313\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Farmland has very little to offer for any wild creature<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E314\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, Professor\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E315\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">Dave Goulson, one of the researchers, is quoted as saying. With the loss of field margins, increased pesticide use and year-round tillage,\u00a0<\/span><em><span id=\"E316\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">vast tracts of land [are now] inhospitable to most forms of life.<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E317\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0It is possible that\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E318\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">insects were flying beyond the perimeter of the reserves to find their<\/span><span id=\"E319\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E320\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">foraging and nesting habitats had disappe<\/span><span id=\"E321\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ared; or that chemicals present in the wider landscape were directly harming\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E322\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span id=\"E325\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">There is an urgent need to uncover the causes<\/span><span id=\"E326\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0of this decline<\/span><\/em><span id=\"E327\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">, the researchers conclude. And so\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E328\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">call upon all of us<\/span><strong><span id=\"E329\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0\u2013<\/span><\/strong><span id=\"E330\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">scientists<\/span><span id=\"E331\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E332\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">amateur entomologis<\/span><span id=\"E333\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">ts,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E334\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">beekeepers<\/span><span id=\"E335\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E336\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">supermarket cashiers, and people sitting in cafe windows\u00a0\u2013 to join in the work of uncovering. T<\/span><span id=\"E337\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">o come close enough\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E338\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">to<\/span><span id=\"E339\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0see the detail,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E340\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">to pay<\/span><span id=\"E341\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0attention to small things<\/span><span id=\"E342\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0with the express aim of extending our range of vision, of better reading and\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E343\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">making sense of<\/span><span id=\"E344\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0the whole. Such a task\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E345\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">will\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E346\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">involve getting lost, giving up<\/span><span id=\"E347\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">\u00a0some of our go-to means of understanding the world, and drawing connections in places we hadn\u2019t before.\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E348\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">It will be a love and a labour<\/span><span id=\"E349\" class=\"qowt-font2-TimesNewRoman\">.
