November 2004<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Poem by Mikael Vogel.\u00a0Translated from German by Holden Silverfish<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Some information on the\u00a0po\u2019o-uli <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The po\u2019o-uli was discovered in 1973 on the slopes of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Haleakal%C4%81\">Haleakal\u0101<\/a>\u00a0on the island of\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maui\">Maui<\/a>. It was the first species of Hawaiian honeycreeper to be discovered since 1923. It was unlike other Hawaiian birds, belonging to an ancient lineage of Hawaiian honeycreepers.<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>No other bird \u2013 living or fossil \u2013 has a structure similar to it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By 1997, only three individuals were known to exist. In 2002, one of these, a female, was captured and taken to a male&#8217;s home range in an attempt to get them to breed. The female, however, had flown back to her own territory, which was 1.5 miles away, by the next day. There was also a ten-day expedition in 2004. The goal of this was to capture all three birds and bring them to a bird conservation centre on the island, in the hope they would produce offspring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On September 9, 2004, one of the remaining birds, a male, was captured and taken to the Maui Bird Conservation Centre in\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olinda,_Hawaii\">Olinda<\/a>, in an attempt to breed the bird in captivity. However, biologists could not find a mate for the male before it died on November 26, 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The decline of the po\u2019o-uli was due to\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habitat\">habitat<\/a>\u00a0loss,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mosquito\">mosquito<\/a>-borne diseases, predation by\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pig\">pigs<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rat\">rats<\/a>,\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cat\">cats<\/a>, and\u00a0<a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Small_Asian_mongoose\">small Asian mongooses<\/a>, and a decline in the native tree snails that the po\u2019o-uli relied on for food.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brian Williams is\u00a0an artist living in Columbus, Ohio, USA, and\u00a0Mikael Vogel is a poet living in Berlin, Germany.
