this is hope<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>challenged
\n<\/span>this is hope<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>fading<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

lying in my hand
\n<\/span>perfect body<\/span>
\n<\/span>eyes tight shut<\/span>
\n<\/span>wings the tiniest of things<\/span>
\n<\/span>not ready to fly<\/span>
\n<\/span>limp blue legs
\n<\/span>dinosaur ancestry<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

this is the heavy weight of hope
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>discarded <\/span><\/p>\n

here in the meadow
\n<\/span>among sorrel and buttercups
\n<\/span>and the heat of a cloudless sky<\/span>
\n<\/span>hope, feathered and filched
\n<\/span>flung to the ground<\/span>
\n<\/span>and left<\/span>
\n<\/span>alone<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

hope\u00a0 <\/span>less<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I do not know
\n<\/span>if it was a crow
\n<\/span>that took this curlew chick<\/span>
\n<\/span>or a fox<\/span><\/p>\n

I do not know if the calls of the parent birds
\n<\/span>that have been circling and calling
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>circling and calling
\n<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>circling and calling
\n<\/span>are calls of anger<\/span>
\n<\/span>or of sorrow<\/span>
\n<\/span>or warning<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

but in those haunting high-pitched cews
\n<\/span>I hear no hope<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

hope lies here<\/span>
\n<\/span>at my feet<\/span>
\n<\/span>while the adults cry<\/span><\/p>\n
